With any kind of outside hot water heating source, regardless of the fuel, it is important to move your precious BTUs through a set of insulated supply and return lines underground, and do it with minimal loss of those BTUs. Anything that contributes to heat loss is your enemy. The best system is one in which well insulated lines are encased in a water tight barrier.

Z- Flex is wrapped within at least two layers of ¼ “ thick foil / foam / foil insulation. It is encased within an extra heavy duty,

co-extruded, outer shell. The outer shell carries a lifetime warranty from its manufacturer.

When discussing insulation for underground pipes - any talk of R Value is nonsense.

R Value is a measure of convection; with Z-Flex Heat Transfer Lines you are only concerned with conduction and radiation. The foil / foam / foil insulation we use handles these nicely. Radiant energy coming from the pipes wants to hit a solid object and heat it. One layer of foil reflects 95 - 98% of this radiant energy back to the pex tubing. Between the foil, the foam creates an effective conductive break, the airspace between the insulation and the inner surface of the outer barrier is even more effective as a conductive break. With this combination of radiant barrier and conductive break, very little of your precious BTUs (heat) will escape your system due to the Z-Flex Heat Transfer Lines construction.
